Criticism

Thursday, September 19th, 2013

Yesterday, my daughter received a criticism from her boss. He called her an overachiever. His feedback was intended to nullify what she knew.

Criticism goes into the flesh like a fishhook. It takes some time to work it back out of our tender psyche.

Yet we live in a society that has been taught to criticize, to use critical thinking to win an arguement. We must simply understand and accept that criticism is part of the human condition. Here are some insights to help you when you have been touched by criticism.

Don’t be afraid of opposition.  Remember, a kite rises against—not with—the wind.

–Hamilton Mabie

I have yet to find a person who did not work better and put forth better effort under a spirit of approval rather than a spirit of criticism.

–Charles Schwab

Being criticized is not a problem if you develop a positive way of dealing with it.  Winston Churchill had framed on the wall of his office the following words of Abe Lincoln:

I do the very best I can, I mean to keep going.

If the end brings me out all right, then what is said against me won’t matter.

If I ‘m wrong, ten angels swearing I was right won’t make a difference.

Churchill received much criticism in his lifetime and Abe Lincoln was roundly criticized in his day, just as most of our public figures are today.  It takes a person of great courage to forge ahead and do what he honestly believes to be right when critics are howling against him.

Remember that all the water in the world won’t sink your boat it if doesn’t get inside.  Rise above it.  Make certain you are right, and then stand by your convictions.

–Zig Ziglar
